Picasa for macintosh

The Macintosh beta version of Picasa is available at Picasa for mac. I have been playing with it & it looks great! Some useful tools, and effective organization of the images on your computer. And, of course, you can't beat the price!

RE: Generator install

One thing you might check - a 5500w generator probably has a 20 & a 30 amp output. If one of the sets of wires is heavier, that pair should be the set going to the 30 amp breaker. A 15 or 20 amp is usually used to feed a rear AC & the 30 amp to feed the RV main panel. If both breakers are the same size it doesn't matter...

RE: UNCLE!... Simple 120vac.? Not For Me..??(UPDATE)

Now, it seems to me that the problem would be in the first failed bulb, or socket,....right? I'm afraid not. Since the bulbs are in series, if any one of them opens (burns out) unless it has a built in shunt it disconnects all in that string. Works the same as a switch. The two methods I have used to find the bad lamp is to replace each one at a time with a known good lamp - boring & takes for ever &, of course, if there are two burned out lamps it won't work, or use a circuit tester to check the string. If you plug the string so that the hot lead is feeding the lamp string, a non-contact circuit tester can be used to find the break. They sell an inexpensive version of the device at christmas time specifically to check xmas lights...

RE: On Line Photo Storage

Looking for the following
Wish List
Hot linking for forums
Unlimited photos
up load a whole folder at once
Videos would be good
$50 a year max
looked at flickr, kodak gallery, shutterfly, and photobucket One possibility - look at starting your own web page. 1&1 provides 10GB for $3.99 per month, 120GB for $4.99 per month running Linux or Microsoft hosts. Although you will need to learn a little bit about web publishing, you will have complete flexibility as well as hundreds of email accounts, your own URL and more.
One additional point. If you are just using the site to make images available to others almost any place will do, but if you are using it for backup, make sure the site does not compress your data.

RE: NY raises tolls

I happen to love NY. All my friends that moved out after retirement have found that their bottom line has not changed that much. There are ways to bypass tolls if you are not in a hurry. The taxes on soda, booze, cigars, etc. don't affect me since my tastes are simple. I live in a beautiful area near lakes and mountains & if tourism is scared away by your post, my camping experience will be more pleasant.
Happy New Year!
I also love upstate NY, but I'll have to agree the property taxes are getting out of hand. Check this list of the Property Taxes as a Percentage of Home Value and notice how many NY counties are at the top!
Oh well, at least I can enjoy living across the street from Lake Ontario...

RE: The list of coaches to import to Canada is shrinking!!

The site has been revamped. They no longer have an HTML version of the list, but a complete PDF version that includes passenger cars, motorcycles, RVs etc is at Import List. Their new webpage for importing vehicles is Importing vehicles to Canada.

RE: Best GPS for class "C"

Quote:
Why have several different gadgets? I bought the new Iphone.
Because you can't always get cell phone reception. The 3G iPhone does not need a AT&T signal to find its location. A GPS receiver is built in. That said, I still would rather use a stand alone GPS. If you are concerned about the overhang of a class C, be sure to purchase a GPS that uses the latest receiver technology (SiRF) or a GPS that can use an external antenna.

RE: 30A vs 50A plug, What's the difference besides amps.

While understanding the difference between the 30A and 50A Plug/wire, would it be possible to change out a 30A cord with a 50A cord, provided that some wiring in the electrical box may need some re configuring? It takes more than just changing the plug & cord, but can be done. Bob Hatch has a web page showing how he made the change...

RE: Microwave ??

You failed to also understand that the megatron tube in microwaves does not like dirty power and most generators are not clean enugh for then to run successfully.
The Honda inverter generators are actually cleaner than most generators, in fact, cleaner than some power lines. Check this site for some waveform examples...

RE: Digital Camera Memory Cards

My basic rule is to limit the card size to the number of images you are willing to lose. Sooner or later, the card itself or a mistake by you will cause a card failure...
For me that is around 100 images.
I did an article on memory cards at the RVnet blog: Photographic Storage Cards

RE: opinions on DSLRs

However with a Digital camera with a digital view finder you don't look through the lens, you look at a monitor. So "single lens" applies, but why do you need the reflx technology that routs that lens to both film and viewfinder?
Actually.. I do understand they are using the term SLR improperly is all. Like so many things they are using it to mean something different from what it means.
A DSLR is a Single Lens Reflex in that the photographer is viewing through an optical viewfinder that uses the same lens as the camera sensor. It uses a mirror that moves out of the way during exposures to direct the image to the viewfinder just the same way a film SLR does. As "bumpy" noted, some of the latest DSLRs use "Live View" as a technique to preview the image on the LCD monitor, but most DSLRs & photographers use the optical viewfinder to frame their images.

RE: Converting 240 to 120

I still occasionally see 10/3 WG with the old outlets. The ground wire is usually wrapped around the plastic jacket and the end under a wire clamp screw. 'Taint right- just is. Believe it or not, Romex was available with the ground wire before the NEC described requirements for its use. Many homes wired in the early 50's used the technique you described (placing the ground wire around the end of the romex under the clamp) as a method of grounding the metal junction boxes. Since the boxes didn't have a place for a ground screw & the receptacles didn't have ground connections, it was one of the early methods used...

RE: GPS software for MacBook

Although Garmin has added programs like Road Trip to provide Mac support, you still need a PC or emulator to convert your maps so that they can be used with a Mac. They really need to make a pure Mac based system. I also prefer Delorme's Street Atlas for planning a trip.
As to Route 66 & Road Buddy, I have not been impressed by either. To be honest, the only reason I still have a PC laptop is to run Street Atlas. Well, I also need it because the Red Cross uses Internet Explorer as the front end to their Disaster Services database & it doesn't run on the outdated version of IE available on the Mac.

RE: Converting 240 to 120

The NRMA 10-30R receptacle is an old dryer outlet. It uses 2 hots & a combined ground/neutral.
If you want to convert the receptacle, the combined ground/neutral would be kept as the ground, one of the hots removed from the 2 pole breaker & connected to the breaker box neutral buss & the other left on the 30 amp breaker. If you wish, you could change the 2 pole breaker to a single pole since you are only using one hot. Replace the receptacle with a NEMA TT-30R. For wiring instructions see Steve Das RV Wiring page.
There is no safe way to use an adapter because the neutral & ground are combined. They should be kept separate in an RV. Newer 4 wire dryer & range receptacles keep the ground & neutral as separate wires & adapters could be used...

At the very least have them check Canadian Import Requirements to see if the RV in question can be imported at all.
